Catching Problems While They’re Small
Big problems in your home usually first start out small. So small that they may be easy to miss or are something you think can be ignored. As a homeowner, it is important to pay attention to these things and fix these problems before that turn into something bigger. Here are small signs your house has a problem that should be addressed right away.
Flickering Lights
Flickering lights may come off as a small annoyance, but they are a bad sign. Sometimes this problem can be solved by seeing if the bulb is loose or replacing it outright. If this doesn’t fix the problem, it’s a sign of something bigger. This is true if it is happening with more than one fixture. An electrician should be called in right away to fix the problem.
Uneven Gaps in Windows and Doors are Signs Your House Has a Problem
A door or window that doesn’t open or close smoothly, won’t lock, or won’t stay closed, is an early sign of a structural shift in the house. This could be a result of swelling in the soil which puts pressure on the foundation, causing it to shift, or it could be the result of normal settling. Regardless of the reason, it shouldn’t be ignored. A reputable contractor will pinpoint the problem and advise you on steps you can take to protect your home.
Slow Drainage
Slow drainage is another small sign that gets overlooked as clogged drains don’t usually cause major problems. However, if you notice that all of the drains in your home are slow, that may point to a clog in the main sewer line. This should be addressed immediately, as this is a plumbing emergency.
Peeling or Blistering Paint
If you have peeling or cracking paint, there is a temptation to simply paint over it and cover up an eyesore. Before that is done you need to first find the cause of the peeling. A leak in the wall will cause paint to separate from the wall, which will lead to it coming off. If you feel any moisture or water behind the blistering paint, contact a plumber instead of covering it up.
Signs Your House Has a Problem Include Crumbling Concrete or Brick
Moisture and chemicals will erode concrete or brick if in contact for long periods of time. This problem will start small but it is important to have the issue solved as quickly as possible to avoid big and irreversible damage.
If you see any of the signs mentioned above, do not ignore them. You should contact a professional as soon as possible to have them rectified as these may be signs your house has a problem.
